The festival at Old Sharjah was declared open on Thursday by the Higher Organising Committee of the Sharjah Ramadan Festival.

Ali Salem Al Mahmoud, Director General of the Sharjah Economic Development Directorate, attended the inauguration along with Abd Al Aziz Al Musalam, Director of the Heritage Department at the Sharjah Department of Culture and Information, Mohammed Al Amin, General Coordinator of the festival, and Faiz Abu Rislaan, Director of Sales at Al Rostamani Group, the sponsors of the heritage event.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Al Mahmoud said that the activities taking place at the village hark back to the old days, reflecting age-old customs and traditions of the predecessors. He stressed the fact that the festival had proved to be very successful over the past few years since it was introduced.

He also stressed that the village activities would help spread awareness on the heritage of UAE, especially among youngsters and school students who are expected to visit the village.

"The village is constructed in the Old Sharjah area which is full of old markets, museums, among other landmarks reflecting the culture of UAE," he said.

Shedding light on the heritage of the UAE is one of the main objectives behind organising the heritage functions every year, Mr Al Amin said, while praising the role of the Sharjah Department of Culture and Information in supporting the heritage functions.

Several exhibitions , including a pottery and old documents, will also take place, he said.
