Tree plantation drive in three UAE schools

DUBAI — An environmental group planted trees on the campuses of three schools in the UAE yesterday.

In line with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) along with Citi Group planted a total of 60 indigenous trees in Salma Alansaria School in Dubai, Dubai National School, Al Barsha and Indian School in Al Ain.

The tree plantation is a part of the EEG’s commitment to the UNEP’s Billion Tree programme, wherein EEG had pledged 1.5 million trees to be planted in the UAE and has surpassed its target. Through this project, it has brought together corporate organisations and schools to plant trees in schools committed to the cause of environmental protection and preservation.

EEG is accredited with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP).

Citi Group came forward to celebrate its Global Community Day by participating in EEG’s ‘One Million Tree Project’.

EEG chairperson Habiba Al Marashi said, “Rapid urbanisation and pollution have affected the desert eco-system and the plants and animals that live in it. There are more buildings, more roads, more people and more cars. This sudden influx is affecting every one. Traffic congestion, exhaust fumes from vehicles and air pollution also take a toll on human beings.”
