Two Emirati youth were killed, and their friend sustained serious injuries when the car they were travelling in flipped over at Garn Al Alam area on Salalah road, in Oman, on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as A S G, aged 19; N Sh, 18; while the injured is H A, 17.
Brigadier Ghaith Hassan AL Zaabi, Director General of Traffic Coordination, UAE Ministry of Interior, said the accident took place on Sunday at 11.30pm, and the Omani authorities immediately transported the injured and the two bodies to hospital. The Royal Oman Police (ROP) are investigating the accident cause.
Brigadier Al Zaabi said most accidents involving UAE citizens abroad were caused by collisions, and vehicles overturning. The main reasons behind these were failure to adhere to speed limits, wrong overtaking, and driver confusion caused by road diversions, road works and the local terrain. But motorists’ misjudgment, wrong overtaking and speeding remained the main culprits.
The brigadier stressed the need to follow traffic rules at any location, as well as exercising extra caution by inspecting the safety standards and requirements in vehicles, and doing regular maintenance, especially before long distance journeys.
UAE motorists are also urged to be careful and attentive to uncertainties on the road, especially in rough, mountainous areas. Drivers are advised to rest periodically and avoid driving long hours.
