Malayali artists and co-founders of India's first Biennale Bose Krishnamachari and Riyas Komu have been ranked among the top 100 most influential people in contemporary art world by London-based ArtReview, a reputed international contemporary art magazine.
The two found place in the prestigious list because of their contribution to contemporary art by organising Kochi-Muziris Biennale, a first of its kind artist-driven initiative in India. With two successful editions behind, work on the third edition has already begun.
ArtReview, compiles an annual list of 100 people in recognition of their contribution to contemporary art. The 'Power 100' list is one of the most established rankings in the art world, featuring artists, gallerists, curators, directors of museums, art foundations and art fairs, collectors and patrons of art. This year, the list was compiled by a 16-member international jury.
Bose Krishnamachari, Biennale Director, said, "ArtReview's 'Power 100' is an established ranking and such international recognition makes us more responsible. It is an acknowledgement of 'soft power' of India by the global art world."
Riyas Komu, Director of Programmes, said, "It's an honour to the Kochi Biennale Foundation team, people of Kochi, and the supporters, including the artists' community, who made Kochi-Muziris Biennale a platform for celebrating co-existence and artists' autonomy."
ArtReview's 2015 'Power 100' list includes Ai Weiwei, the most acknowledged Chinese contemporary artist, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Julia Peyton Jones, Directors of Serpentine Galleries, Okwui Enwezor, curator, Nicholas Serota, Director of Tate, Marina Abramovic, performance artist, artists Gerhard Richter, Jeff Koons and William Kentridge, Shaikha Hoor Al Qasimi, President of Sharjah Art Foundation and Adriana Pedrosa, Artistic Director of Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo.
