Two killed in SUV collision

DUBAI — Two persons were killed and eight others injured after two Land Cruisers collided at the Al Mankhool intersection in the direction of Dubai Customs building on Thursday night.

Salah Bu Farousha, Head of the Dubai Traffic Prosecution, told Khaleej Times that the accident took place around 9.40pm.

According to the witnesses, the 35-year-old British driver tried to turn left and jumped the red signal and his vehicle hit the other Land Cruiser driven by a 32-year-old Pakistani. A 68-year-old Briton, Joan Sing, who was accompanying the British driver and a 47-year-old Pakistani national travelling in the Pakistani driver's vehicle died. The police ambulance rushed eight people, including four Saudi tourists and an Indian travelling in the Pakistani driver's vehicle, to Rashid Hospital. Both drivers were also injured.

Bu Farousha said the tests have shown that the British driver had consumed alcohol.

He said the traffic prosecutor on duty, Ayoub Ahli, rushed to the scene and conducted investigations.

The British driver who caused the accident is under arrest and would appear before the Dubai Traffic Prosecution on Saturday.

The traffic department, operations room of the police and traffic officials of the Roads and Transport Authority have been asked to check the images on the video camera installed at the intersection and submit the relevant images to the Traffic Prosecution, Bu Farousha said.
