A young Indian filmmaker from the UAE caught the attention of Nitin Gadkari, the Indian Minister for Road Transport and Highways and Shipping, during an event organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) in Dubai on Wednesday.
After the event, 21-year-old Rohit Iyengar - who was born in Saudi Arabia and raised in the UAE - rushed to the minister and showed him a four-minute video he produced that showed Indians' suggestions to fix India's roads and traffic snarls.
"Unsatisfactory roads and traffic (situation) in India really need attention. I have been there for work for four months and had a terrible experience. Being an Indian, I thought it would be better to come up with a solution rather than complaints," said Iyengar. "I would say this was an apt opportunity for me to at least bring this issue to the attention of our minister. The video is already on YouTube in English and Hindi, and I am planning to translate it into 45 Indian regional languages so that it reaches everywhere from municipalities to corporators and authorities."
Impressed with Iyengar's idea and compilation of multiple steps for improving India's roads, Gadkari asked him to send the video to him later.
C.A. Pankaj Mundra, chairman of ICAI Dubai, told Khaleej Times: "The minister has taken this (video) very positively and has asked me to connect this talented person with his personal assistant soon. I think it's time to hear the youth and involve them in India's growth."
The minister attended the event to mark the ICAI's 35th anniversary.
4 minutes to fix India's roads
The video makes these suggestions to fix India's roads:
> Lane Marking/directions
> Elimination of bottleneck roads
> Driver's licensing process should be stricter
> Car manufactures should focus on safety
> Illegal parking or encroachments should be banned
