UAE committed to consumer rights

AL AIN — Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Salih, under-secretary in the Ministry of Economy, said that the UAE government was committed to the protection of consumers.

Speaking at a symposium on consumer protection here yesterday, the under-secretary said the Federal Law No.24 issued in 2006 had established a new government department for consumer protection under the Ministry of Economy (MoE).

The new department looks after issues related to consumer care, he said adding controlling price hikes and monopolies would also fall under the purview of the new department.

“The regulation of the UAE Council of Ministers has been issued to establish Supreme Committee for Consumer Protection consisting 21 members and headed by Minister of Economy,” he added.

Mohammed Abdullah Al Kowaity, Director-General of the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ADCCI), Al Ain Branch, said that the consumer protection was a top priority for the MoE.

The symposium was organised by the Faculty of Shariah and Law of the UAE University and Al Ain Branch of ADCCI under the patronage of Dr Hadef bin Joan Al Dhahry, the UAEU Vice-Chancellor in collaboration with the MoE.
