The nomination came at the end of the two-day high-profile Regional Conference on Fighting Counterfeit Medicines, which was organised by the Ministry of Health last week.
“The conference proposed that the UAE relay to all regional countries, any updates on technological advances that can help fight the crime,” said Dr Amin Al Amiri, CEO Medical Practice and Licence, Ministry of Health. Based on the recommendations, the UAE also decided to set up a local committee to study the kinds of medical fraud taking place, following which new regulations and standards will be devised.
The conference also decided that warehouses and storage areas at the ports and within the emirates should be scanned by using advanced technology to fight trade in counterfeit medicines and medical equipment.
Dr Al Amiri called upon the authorities concerned, including Customs, airports and municipalities, to coordinate with regard to any drug seizures, even if for personal use.
Dr Steve Allen, Senior Director of Global Security at Pfizer, said, “Medical fraud is spreading widely and rapidly.
Counterfeiting is no longer taking place randomly, but is an organised criminal practice which constitutes a vicious attack on pharmaceutical supply chains.”
According to Ashley How, Regional Director, Pharmaceutical Security Institute, “One of the most basic steps we must take in our fight against counterfeit is to begin to make vigorous and intensive efforts to raise awareness of dangerous side-effects that may be caused by these drugs.”
The UAE will host an international conference on medical fraud next year.
