The agreement had been signed on May 1, 1999 during the visit made by the late Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan to Sultanate of Oman and his meeting with His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

Major-General Saif Abdullah Al Shaafar, Interior Ministry’s Under-Secretary, signed the maps on behalf of the UAE, while his Omani counterpart, Mohammed bin Sultan Al Busaidi, signed on behalf of Oman, the statement said.

The border in this sector had already been demarcated by means of two agreements signed in 1959 and 1960 between the late Shaikh Shakhbout bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the late Sultan Saeed bin Taymour.

Umm Al Zumool is the meeting point of the tripartite borders between the UAE, Oman and Saudi Arabia. Contacts between the three countries to specify the exact location of this point are under way.
