UK group to perform baroque, and classical music in UAE

ABU DHABI — A group of 28 musicians from Britain, specialising in baroque and classical music, will perform in the UAE during their half cultural, half educational tour.

The first performance of the group named English Concert will be held tomorrow in Abu Dhabi’s Emirates Palace, followed by a concert at Madinat Theatre in Dubai on January 30. The group will also perform at Shaikh Khalifa Auditorium in Al Ain on January 31,

The English Concert will also stage educational performances at various schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, as well as support three local charities, the Al Noor and the Autism centres in Dubai, and the Future Centre in Abu Dhabi.

“Music, like all art forms, is a bridge to better understanding amongst communities and nations. The baroque and classical periods have contributed some of the most loved pieces of the Western musical repertoire and the English Concert is renowned for its prowess in interpreting such works,” said the Director-General of Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei.

The English Concert, established 34 years ago, has a repertoire of more than 100 pieces and has released just as many CDs, some of which will be available at the concert venues in the UAE.

Laurel Powers-Freeling, board member of the English Concert, said the aim of the orchestra is to perform baroque and classical music the way the composers wanted it. “It is an authentic orchestra, performing the very soul of the music,” added Powers-Freeling.
