The VACs are part of the British government visa department’s policy to introduce more secure and easier application procedures for UK visas. VACs, which are operated by commercial partners of the British embassies, are using biometrics, quick and safe electronic finger scanning, similar to the ones already used by the Abu Dhabi International Airport. The UAE is now the 107th country to offer biometric service for UK visas.
In Abu Dhabi, the new VAC was inaugurated at a ribbon cutting ceremony by Ian Wood, UK charge d’affaires and John Hawkins, consul-general. In his opening speech, Wood said that Britain was extremely proud of its long-standing ties with the UAE. “We want UAE residents — both UAE nationals and residents from other countries — to view the United Kingdom as an open and welcoming environment, in which to do business, to study and to visit,” added Wood.
He also explained that the new centre had a larger capacity than the old one at the embassy, and no queues were expected, especially since the biometric procedure only takes a few minutes. “Probably the first few days it will be crowded, as we stopped taking in visa applications at the embassy for one week now, in order to transfer everything here, but even so the centre is large enough to accommodate everyone,” mentioned Wood.
In addition, the VACs are opened for longer hours, from 9 am to 5 pm. “Parking is readily available and our centres are accessible to those with special needs,” pointed out the charge d’affaires. The new VACs also have VIP rooms, where, for an extra charge, people can apply in a more discreet and private environment. Every year, the British Embassy issues around 72,000 visas in the UAE, the majority of them within 24 hours. “With the new biometric system, we will also be able to issue an increasing number of five and 10-year visas for trusted, frequent travellers,” said Wood.
The VAC Abu Dhabi is located in Khalidya Tower, level 02, Sheikh Zayed Street, while the Dubai centre has been set up in Burjuman Office Tower, level 7, Trade Centre Road , Bur Dubai.
