A unique collection of stamps bearing historical value to the Arab world and Islamic culture will be displayed at the first-of-its-kind event at Mega Mall from September 22 to 27. “This event is about education,” said Abdulla Khoory, president of the Emirates Philatelic Association and a local businessman.

He said he hopes the exhibition will encourage the Emirati population to take an active interest in the study and preservation of stamps and understand the rich culture showcased by stamps in the UAE.

Apart from displaying some of the region’s significant stamp collections, the exhibition also aims to provide a base for philatelists to come together.

“The association has a little over 250 members at the moment, although not all of them are active members. We believe there are several philatelists in the region who have not made contact with us. We are here to benefit them, so we hope many of them will come forward,” he said.

A rare collection of stamps made in Iraq during the British occupation from 1917 to 1923 is among the list of exhibits. Owned by Freddy Klatastchy, an Iraqi who moved to London at the age of 16 in 1973, the collection may include key insights to the Middle East during the 20th century.
