A new strategy approved in Dubai on Saturday will see economic and creative free zones come up at universities that will allow students to carry out business and creative activities. These activities will be integrated into the higher education curriculum, according to the strategy approved by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai.
The aim is to support students with education, research and funding, and pave the way for universities to graduate "not students, but successful entrepreneurial employers".
The idea was first floated by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, as he outlined nine articles in his 'Fifty-Year Charter' in January.
Sheikh Hamdan highlighted the importance of supporting graduates in their "quest to create progress". "As we approve the strategy to create economic and creative free zones in universities, we set in motion a revolutionary plan that will assist students to realise their dreams of becoming young successful business leaders of the future," Sheikh Hamdan said.
The strategy, which was prepared by the Dubai Future Foundation in collaboration with other government entities, prioritises collaboration with top international research institutions and universities to achieve its goals.
Sheikh Hamdan said the Government of Dubai is taking the "necessary steps" to implement the Fifty-Year Charter to ensure a "sustained development march that will turn Dubai into the best city in the world".
