A viral video which shows a mobile phone charger exploding in a man's pocket and engulfing him in flames while he was purportedly at The Dubai Mall is fake, the police have said. A top police officer said the incident did not take place anywhere in Dubai.
The 48-second video shows mall visitors and staff trying to put out the flames and rescue the man.
A civil defence source confirmed to Khaleej Times they were not notified about such an incident from any mall in Dubai.
Major-general Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, assistant commander-in-chief of the Dubai Police for criminal investigation, urged the public not to believe or circulate unverified information on social media. He warned that those found guilty of spreading rumours and fake news can be jailed for up to three years and fined Dh250,000.
