A $1.1 billion NASA spacecraft called Juno began its attempt late Monday to orbit Jupiter on a high-stakes mission to probe the solar system's origin.
Juno closed in on the largest planet in our cosmic neighborhood, five years after the unmanned solar-powered observatory launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
The spacecraft was traveling at a speed of more than 130,000 miles per hour (209,200 kilometers per hour) when it fired its engines to slow down enough to be captured into Jupiter's orbit.
This "burn," or orbit insertion, began at 11:18 pm (0318 GMT) and should last around 35 minutes.
After 5 years traveling to #Jupiter, @NASAJuno arrives today! This video shows a peek of its final approach: https://t.co/ysOKuGUWaQ"We see the expected sharp shift upward in the Doppler residuals indicating that the engine has started," said an engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, as applause filled the mission control room.

Main engine burn is go. I'm burnin', burnin', burnin' for you, #Jupiter. pic.twitter.com/b3SHm3GphjA key concern are radiation levels - as high as 100 million X-rays in the course of a year, explained.
