Winners of letter-writing, design contests honoured

DUBAI — Students who won the ‘International letter-writing competition’ and ‘Postal stamp design contest’ received mementos and certificates at a ceremony held here yesterday on the occasion of the World Postal Day and the 133rd anniversary of the Universal Postal Union.

Twelve students of UAE schools won the letter-writing competition and eight students postal stamp design contest. The teachers who trained the winning students were also given mementos and certificates on the occasion.

Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Government Sector Development, and Dr Hanif Hassan, Minister of Education, were present at the function organised by the Emirates Post (Empost).

Dr Hanif Hassan also received commemorative stamps issued by Empost to mark the accession day of the President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Abdullah Al Dabous, Director of Empost, recalled the formation of the Universal Postal Union 133 years ago. Representatives of 22 countries gathered in Switzerland after the Treaty of Berne was signed on October 9, 1874, to create the General Postal Union. The name was changed to the Universal Postal Union in 1878.

Al Dabous said Empost was being modernised constantly.

Salim Al Shaye, assistant manager (Empost), delivered the main speech on behalf of Edward Dayan, the International General Manager of the Universal Postal Union. He stressed the need for continuous development of the postal sector.
