A worker was killed while three others were injured in a fire at Sharjah's Hamriyah Port on Saturday morning.
According to initial details, the fire erupted early in the morning around 5.45 am in a ship - bearing a Panama flag - at Hamriyah Port. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched after the operation room was informed of the fire.
Firefighters reached the site of the fire within three minutes and doused the blaze within 40 minutes.
The ship was carrying diesel and oil products.
Col. Sami Al Naqbi, Director-General of Sharjah Civil Defence said firefighters' quick response prevented the fire from spreading to the port area, tankers and factories at the port. They also controlled the diesel spill into the sea, preventing further pollution.
He also commended Civil Defence teams from Ajman and Umm Al Quwain for assisting in the operation
The workers were transferred to Kuwait Hospital's Intensive Care Unit, where they were in a stable condition.
The Hamriyah Free Zone Administration confirmed the death of one worker.
Col Al Naqbi pointed out that these accidents are not a cause for concern because they occur around the world and highlighted the mechanism of dealing with such fires and dealing with their spread.
