DUBAI - The first joint camel and horse auction in the world will be held on the sidelines of the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition, in the United Arab Emirates, which will kick off on September 12 this year, organisers said on Monday.
“Some 300 horses and 135 camels will be auctioned on the sidelines of the event,” said Mohammed Khalef Al Mazroui, chairman of the organizing committee.
“Like falconry, camel and horse races are closer to the hearts of millions of Arabs. They are associated with the qualities of courage, valour and knighthood. They are also age-old sports which have been handed down from one generation to the next,” said Mazroui.
The show will be held under the patronage of Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Wam reported.
The auction will be organized in conjunction with al-Hejen (Arabic for camel) Research Centre, which made an unprecedented scientific achievement recently when it successfully delivered the world’s first “test tube” camel, using in-vitro fertilization techniques.
