The world's largest indoor farm is set to rise in the desert of Abu Dhabi, with a new joint venture between a local firm and a Dutch farming solutions company.
The mega project GreenFactory Emirates - a partnership between GrowGroup IFS in Barendrecht, The Netherlands, and RainMakers Capital Investment LLC in Abu Dhabi - will see the production of 10,000 tonnes of fresh produce every year.
To be built on a plot of 17.5 hectares and a cultivation area of 160,000 square metres. it will innovate indoor farming with the most advanced growing system from The Netherlands.

The facility will combine vertical and flat farming and solve the usual cultivation restrictions arising from extreme weather conditions. With tech, it is now possible to produce high-quality vegetables all year round, anywhere on the planet, and 100 per cent pesticide-free. Seeding, harvesting and whipping up ready-to-eat products will all be done under one roof.

At a total cost of Dh650 million, GreenFactory Emirates will be developed in phases within three years. The first phase is expected to be up and running before Expo 2020 Dubai in October 2021, allowing the farm to share its wonders with the world.

Mariam Hareb Almheiri, Minister of State for Food Security, welcomed how the private sector is stepping up to support the UAE's transition towards more sustainable food systems. - Wam
