The higher national committee of the Year of Giving held its first meeting on Wednesday to lay down a comprehensive framework for the initiative and discuss its broad lines and programmes and tackle the key points around the year.
The higher committee includes seven member ministers: Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet and Future Affairs, who serves as the Chairman of the Higher National Committee; Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansoori, Minister of Economy; Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashimi, Minister of State for International Cooperation Affairs; Najla bint Mohammed Al Awar, Minister of Community Development; Dr Sultan bin Ahmed Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of State and Chairman of the National Media Council board; Ohoud bint Khalfan Al Roomi, Minister of State for Happiness; and Shamma bint Suhail Al Mazrooi, Minister of State of Youths Affairs.
The meeting was in line with a declaration made earlier by the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, that the year 2017 to be a Year of Giving and benevolence, and under the directives of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to initiate a general framework and outlines for the year of goodness.
"The year of giving is a chance to reinforce and ingrain the nation's giving to the young generation," said Al Gergawi.
Al Gergawi stressed that the higher committee shall be working on turning the vision placed by the sagacious leadership to a workable programme, and will be inculcating the value of giving and goodness into the Emirati society.
The committee tackled the objective of the Year of Giving and the ways to put these objectives into being.
The initiative is reclined on three major angles, which include enforcing social responsibility across the country by promoting the role of the private sector as an essential partner in the development process; confronting the communal challenges; and instilling the culture of volunteering in the society and deepen such a value by making maximum use of all forms of volunteering.
A secretariat of the Year of Giving is also formed. The mission of the secretary is to provide technical and administrative support to the higher national committee.

Sub-committees formed:

  • Social responsibility committee chaired by Ministry of Economy
  • Volunteering committee chaired by Ministry of Community Development
  • Serving the nation chaired by Minister of State for Youth
  • Media committee to be chaired by National Media Council
  • Local committees
