Car owners can file an insurance claim in the UAE if their vehicles are damaged in a building fire, according to Ashok Sardana, CEO of Continental Insurance Brokers.

While speaking to Khaleej Times, Sardana explained that car owners who have purchased a comprehensive insurance policy can make claims from their own insurance companies, but those who have third-party insurance need to make a claim against the building and the building's insurance company will pay them for the damages.

"Those cars which got damaged in the building fire are covered. You have to talk to your own car insurance company, which will claim from the insurer of the building. But if the car owner has purchased third-party insurance, then he has to make a claim against the building and the building's insurance will process it and settle the claim. A third-party car insurance holder cannot claim insurance from their own company," said Sardana.

The insurance coverage will also apply to cars parked in the vacant lots near the buildings damaged in the fire, Sardana said, adding that all building owners are required to have insurance of their property.

On Tuesday night, a high-rise in Sharjah was gutted in a blaze, causing damage to many cars. Police say highly flammable 'aluminum composite cladding' was responsible for helping the blaze spread rapidly.

Another industry executive working in the UAE insurance sector for around 15 years also said that since building is insured, the third-party liability must also be covered.
