Speaking on the occasion of the sixth convocation for ZU, held at the Abu Dhabi Armed Forces Club, Shaikh Nahyan said the university is in the process of becoming the cornerstone of a viable research centre in the country.
He said the university has established a responsive administrative structure and important academic practices and initiatives, and made impressive advances since its inception as a national university.
Shaikh Nahyan said the university has developed a graduate programme and that many of its faculties are engaged in research and community services. However, he said aspirations for the future of the university are just beginning to be realised.
"We still have a long way to go. Shaping the future of the university requires that we broaden our mission and expand our programmes to meet the crucial needs of our country and our region.
"These goals will require a visionary and consistent leadership by our university's faculty and staff, working as a team. This vision can be a daunting challenge and a wonderful opportunity for all of us".
Shaikh Nahyan emphasised the importance of team-work in shaping the future of the university and assisting effectively in fulfilling the goal of making the university a premier institution of higher learning.
"By working together we shall ensure that each college of the university will adhere to the same rigorous academic standards as found at major universities throughout the world," he said.
Shaikh Nahyan said the students of the university should have good knowledge about their culture and traditions, fluency in both Arabic and English languages, proficiency in the use of computer knowledge and experience in seeking inter-disciplinary relationships.
He said the university students should also be competent in their major fields of study, should be able to engage in research through independent study and should be prepared to become leaders as well as lifelong learners.
"With these skills and attitudes in hand, our graduates can become effective leaders within their communities, ready to accept rapid change and capable of confronting global challenges of the 21 century.
Shaikh Nahyan honoured some faculty members and employees of the university for their distinguished performance.
Those who were honoured included Dominick Bending, in charge of student services, Suzanne Kadoura from the publication department, Amal Kamil from the College of Communication and Media Sciences and Dr Nasr Arif from the Arabic language and Islamic Studies Department.
