DUBAI - Zed Al Refai, the first Arab to climb Mount Everest, was forced to abandon his attempt to scale the Matterhorn on Monday because of adverse weather conditions.
Mr Al Refai and German climbers Hermann Berie and Dr Gernot Overbeck finally conceded defeat on Monday afternoon as heavy snow and high winds made conditions too dangerous. "It's very disappointing, but we'll be back next year to try again," said the Dubai-based Kuwaiti businessman, whose Mission Matterhorn had been sponsored by the Hotel Mont Cervin and Residence in Zermatt, and Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS).
