A bride in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly city called off her wedding after she was forcefully dragged to the dance floor by the groom’s friends during the wedding ceremony.

According to a report in Times of India, the bride, who belonged to another village, had arrived earlier with her family to Bareilly in preparation for a grand wedding celebration. However, some inebriated guests were involved in cheap thrills, resulting in a nasty incident that ended the wedding party.

The bride’s family objected to the girl being forced to dance leading to a heated argument between both sides. The bride's father said that his daughter could not be forced to tie the knot with a man who did not respect her.

"The groom’s friends misbehaved with my sister. In our family, we don't allow women to dance in public," the bride's cousin said.

Later, the groom’s family made an attempt to convince the bride’s family to solemnise the marriage. The bride, however, turned down the request, and returned home with the family.

"I respect her decision. I cannot force her to marry a person who doesn’t respect her," the bride's father told TOI.

Police were then asked to intervene after the bride's family lodged an official complaint. The woman’s family had given a dowry complaint. Following this, both sides were made to arrive at a settlement with the groom’s family agreeing to pay Rs650,000.
