THE CAPED CRUSADER is known for his flashy vehicles, yet the fact he may go for a Victory Magnum didn't cross our mind until a friend commented, "hey, hey, it's Batman."
"Holy two-wheeled transportation!" we exclaimed as we ignored the sarcastic undertones of the greeting. The friend was correct. This particular Victory, daubed in black paint highlighted with crystal-like flecks and possessing a striking asymmetrical design was something The Dark Knight may take for a spin. If this were a sitcom there would now be a smash-cut to us tearing round a corner belting out the Batman TV show theme at the top of our voice, which we cannot confirm nor deny actually occurred.
The flagship model in Victory's Bagger line, this was our first time trying out one of the marque's larger-than-life creations. What had always attracted us to the brand was its vintage, or lack there of. Being only 20 years old, Victory isn't tied to any standard practices which must be adhered to keep the fan base satisfied. This is why these streamlined crazy horses can roll off the production line and people don't bat and eyelid.
You really can't overstate how visually appealing the Magnum is to onlookers. It only takes a few moments for a stranger to have the confidence to sidle up, offer a complement and then ask how it sounds. And for that there are two answers. The first is the more traditional. The exhaust, connected to a Freedom 106 V-Twin engine producing around 1800 ccs of power, is ludicrous. Imagine a squadron of World War Two fighters flying in formation through a particularly echoey valley and you're close. One or two backfires per trip only add to the excitement.
Then there's the answer you probably wouldn't expect  - the sound system. A 100-watt system with six speakers allows you to plug in and share your tunes with everyone. It adds to the party atmosphere the Magnum evokes.
Handling wise, it took us a while to get used to the relatively smaller handlebar than we were expecting for such a big machine (curb weight 367kg), but once we did it was as if we'd been riding it for years.
If you want a slice of the action, you also don't have to be Bruce Wayne rich to get in on it. The Victory Magnum starts at Dhs95,000.
