ANOTHER ENTRY INTO the hatchback war. Again it's from Peugeot whose presence isn't as keenly felt in the region as it is in Europe.
Peugeot's popularity overseas can largely be explained by the brand's willingness to cut a deal with the consumer. If it's the right price, someone will take it. This, in the past, has often come at the expense of quality. Thankfully the 208 and the GT version driven is a step in the right direction in addressing that balance.
The 208 is a car that appeals visually. In a world where the VW Golf in its various states has the ability to take your breath away and the Merc AMG A45, whilst a bit pricey, is also a marvel to look at, the 208 can still hold its head high in the crowd. The GT is even nicer. Okay the front grille may be a little smiley rather than the determined' look of most of its contemporaries, but on the whole the curvy back, the wheel arches and even the wheels that come as standard on this model give it some street cred.
Inside, you're welcomed by the familiar scent of a nicely appointed leather interior. Everything is also ergonomically sound from the driver's perspective. The little chunky steering wheel takes a bit of getting used to, but when it's attached to probably the lightest steering in this segment, it soon fades as an issue. 
What particularly impresses is the onboard technology. A large touchscreen atop the central column gives you control over most of the car's settings. It's simply nice to look at and intuitive.
When it comes to power the 208 GT Line comes with a four-cylinder 1.6-litre motor which produces 120hp. That is never going to set the world on fire, but for a vehicle this size, it is just about sufficient.
What Peugeot are trying to do with this version of the 208, is evoke some of the sensation you'd get if driving one of the GTi versions that often take to the track, as it did at the recent 24H Dubai race.  In looks and feel it succeeds as you nestle into the almost race-like cockpit. You just won't get it round a course in the same amount of time.
