Almost everyone in the UAE will be flying out for the holidays and maybe even for New Year's Eve to be with their families back home. By this alone, one can surmise that Dubai and even Abu Dhabi's airports are already filled to the brim with travellers waiting to go out as the time draws closer. Here are some ways to avoid unnecessary agitation AND to save money.

Take the Metro

The beautiful thing about the Dubai Metro is that it has dedicated stations for both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. If you need to get to Terminal 2, Dubai Airports have a 24-hour shuttle that goes between the three terminals for free. And since we're on the topic of terminals:

Know which terminal is which

Terminal 3 - All Emirates and Qantas flights, Terminal 1 - All other international flights and Terminal 2 - Regional and budget airlines like flydubai.

Check-in online

Which would you want? Stressing out in a long check-in queue or filling up a simple check-in form on the Internet and off you go?

Arrive early, super early

Arrive at the airport three or four hours before your flight takes off; fewer people in the check-in queues and more convenience for you.

Make your wait worthwhile

So you came early and have hours of time on your hand? Don't just sit around. For Dh180 you can get access to the Marhaba lounges at all the terminals which will give you a place to unwind, reliable WiFi, a buffet and showers if you need a little refresher.

Pimp your luggage

While you may buy the flashiest luggage in Carrefour, everybody else still has it. The solution? Customise it. Add stickers, put some writing on it and if you've got the knack, even draw something.

Try this if you're thirsty

You can't bring water through the security gates BUT you can bring empty bottles and fill them after passing through the gates.

Head left

Studies show that since most people are right handed, they tend to go to the queues on the right-hand side. Head left for every queue you have to face at the airport; it'll be less of a hassle.

DON'T hoard the gate

You have assigned seats, right? So wait out the insane queues at the boarding gate and you will have more time for relaxing.

Fly late and we mean LATE

Avoid the airport rush hour and enjoy a minimal queue if you choose to fly late at night. Other than that, flying late helps you fall asleep easily.
