The low cost carrier, which made its debut exactly six months ago when the airline’s first Boeing 737-800 was unveiled before a crowd of media and VIPs at the Dubai Airport Expo’s Royal Pavilion, chose same venue the Bahrain route announcement.

Ghaith Al Ghaith, chief executive of flydubai, said the launch of the tenth route at the Dubai Airshow was a nice way to round off a successful six months since the unveiling of the first flydubai aircraft.

“On May 18, when I was watching the crowd catch their first glimpse of a flydubai aircraft, I would not have predicted that six months on we would have achieved so much,” he said.

“In that time we’ve launched 10 routes, begun operations to eight cities, taken delivery of five aircraft, opened a new flydubai HQ and carried thousands of passengers. In short we have become one of the fastest growing start-up airlines in the world,” said Al Ghaith.

It has not been without a few hitches along the way, but this has been a very exciting and relatively smooth journey, he said. “We still have a long way to go, but we have built a good foundation and I believe we are well placed to handle the challenges that we, as any business, will have to face.”

Bahrain is one of the Gulf’s most established business and commercial centres and in 2008 it was named the world’s fastest growing financial centre by the City of London’s Global Financial Centres Index.

Bahrain is also a gateway for the eastern region of Saudi Arabia with its highly important oil and gas industry. The Bahrain service will target the peak morning and evening periods of travel and provide an alternative on an already busy route.

Flydubai’s double daily flights to Bahrain (FZ015 and FZ021) will leave Dubai International Airport Terminal 2 at 0715hrs and 2005hrs, arriving at 0730hrs and 2020hrs local time respectively. The return flights FZ016 and FZ022 leave Bahrain at 0815hrs and 2105hrs arriving in Dubai at 1025hrs and 2315hrs local time respectively. Flight prices start from just Dh250 one way.

Flydubai prices include all taxes and one piece of hand baggage weighing up to 10 kilogrammes.

The other nine routes in flydubai’s growing network are: Beirut-Lebanon, Amman-Jordan, Damascus and Aleppo-Syria, Alexandria-Egypt, Djibouti-Africa, Doha-Qatar, Khartoum-Sudan, which are already operational, and Baku-Azerbaijan, with services starting on November 20th.

He said the flydubai model is simple, with customers paying only for the services they want to receive. The price includes all taxes and one piece of hand baggage, weighing up to 10 kilogrammes, per passenger.

A nominal payment of Ch5 allows customers to select their seat and just Dh50 secures the extra legroom positions. Bookings can be changed for a small fee, plus any difference in the fare, and food and drink can be purchased on board.

On Wednesday, flydubai signed a deal with Danzas AEI Emirates, a joint venture between Al Tayer Group and DHL, a subsidiary of Deutsche Post, the world’s largest logistics group.

The role for Danzas is to coordinate all flydubai’s logistics requirements from transporting “Above and Below Wing” consumables of the airline. Danzas has facilities in Dubai Cargo Village, Dubai Airport Free Zone, Jebel Ali Free Zone, Dubai Investment Park and Sharjah, and provides transport by ocean, road and air as well as warehousing and distribution services.

“Danzas belongs to the world’s largest logistics company and has extensive experience of working in the Middle East, which makes them the ideal choice to handle flydubai’s logistics requirements,” said Al Ghaith.

Enver Moretti, CEO and President of DHL Global Forwarding EMA Region, said that his company already has a strong association with the Aerospace and Aviation industry in Dubai and across the region, both parties are looking forward to the benefits of a long term arrangement.

“Partnering with flydubai is going to be extremely rewarding for us both. This is very much a ‘strengthen and support’ exercise where we can take care of the non-core aspects of the flydubai business and help the airline maintain its growth and reach its targets. 50 aircraft over the next few years is going to raise a lot of logistics questions and we are here to provide the solutions.”
