The Covid-19 pandemic upended the entertainment industry, forcing theatres globally to shut down to contain the spread of the virus. Major big screen releases of 2020 resorted to OTT platforms to screen their films. Following the lifting of the lockdown in several countries, theatres are slowly re-opening and allowing fans to get their fix of big screen entertainment in a safe environment. Among the new films slated for release is Tarun Dhanrajgir’s Bolo Hau which will premiere in theatres on January 15.

A frothy love story set in Hyderabad, Bolo Hau sees entertainment editor-turned-actor, Jahnavi Dhanrajgir, making her screen debut in the movie directed by her father and yesteryear actor, Tarun. Ankit Rathi plays the male lead in the film.

Director Tarun is a well-known model and actor from the 70s. He also worked extensively in the theatre world and featured in serials like Terah Panne and Aarohan. He donned the director’s hat with Kis Hudh Tak in 2010. Tarun is best remembered for playing the role of Mr. Darcy in the Indian remake of Pride and Prejudice, which aired on Doordarshan in 1985.

Bolo Hau, he says, is in many ways a first for him: It’s his daughter’s Bollywood debut as well as the first movie to be made under his banner. Khaleej Times spoke to Tarun to know more about the romantic tale that has a Hyderabadi touch to it.

Bolo Hau is a first for you on many fronts. Can you tell us more about that?

The trailer is receiving good response and I’m looking forward to the release of the film. Yes, Bolo Hau is a first on many instances for me — it’s Jahnavi’s debut movie and it’s also the first film under Dhanrajgir Productions as well as the first Hindi release of 2021. I hope this will encourage our movie business to go back to its original glory.

What is Bolo Hau about, why did you choose this title for the movie?

Bolo Hau literally means ‘Say Yes’ (in Dakhani language). Hence, the tag line: ‘Say Yes to Love’. Though the story follows the regular romantic tale format, what’s unique about our film is the language — it’s Hindi/Urdu mix with a Hyderabadi (Dakhani) accent. Even our songs have that (Hyderabadi) touch. The movie provides wholesome entertainment that the whole family can enjoy. There’s song, dance, drama and lots of humour. It will leave you with a smile.

How was it working with a bunch of new talents?

It was exciting to work with mostly new actors and fascinating to watch them bring their characters to life. That’s what makes cinema so exciting — to create a world from pure imagination, give it life and character, and present it to the people. I hope the audience likes it.

What inspired you to make this film?

I basically wanted to make a happy, light-hearted film. A feel-good film. I wanted my audiences to walk out of the movie with a smile. And a love story seemed the right subject for it. I decided to take this opportunity to present the unique culture of Hyderabad as it is today. Hence, this movie.

What makes Bolo Hau unique and different from other Bollywood entertainers?

Though it is an entertainer with the usual song, dance and drama, Bolo Hau is presented very authentically. Every character and situation is something that you see all around you. That is what draws you into the film. It is real. You will be able to relate to even the smallest character. We went to such detail in characterising that even the lyrics were written to character. The question we always asked ourselves is: will this character say this and will he then say it like this? A lot of hard work and thought has gone into the making.
