Starring: Akshay Kumar, Radhika Apte, and Sonam Kapoor!
There is something unique about this movie 'Pad Man' because even though the subject is very much known, the excitement to watch it still remains. Besides, the movie trailers say it all, leaving no suspense or thrilling climax to the imagination of the audience. Pad Man is a biopic of a common man Arunachalam Muruganantham who created a machine that would produce low-cost sanitary napkins and save women, especially in the rural India, from dangerous illnesses that result from unhygienic use of cloth during menstruation.
Akshay Kumar is the Pad Man and has done a commendable job with his mediocre yet mighty personality in the movie. He is the man who sees the vices women are facing and bring to them sanitary napkins that slowly become a revolution. The padman becomes a laughing stock for his obsession with pads which angers his wife, played by Radhika Apte, as well as his other family members. Then, comes Sonam Kapoor who encourages Akshay to empower women at large. The Pad Man then decides to give away pads for free just to empower women and to unshackle them diseases by addressing the issue of menstruation which is a social stigma even today.
Screenplay
The way the whole idea has been depicted on screen is quite impressive. The screenplay is good and definitely keeps the audience hooked onto the movie.
Music
Music director Amit Trivedi has given good music and has kept in mind the social issue the film is made on.
Editing
Editing seems to be lagging and could have been better. The result is that the movie feels a bit too long.
Direction
R. Balki has done a marvellous job with exemplary direction. Considering the sensitive topic of the film, it becomes very challenging for a director to link the film emotionally with the current situation. And, R. Balki has succeeded in doing so with Pad Man!
Acting
Akshay Kumar has managed to create a buzz around the movie and his performance, even before the film was released. He has played the role realistically and proved he is a seasoned actor. Radhika has also given her best performance as she plays the padman's wife. While, Sonam Kapoor gives a fresh turn to the film with her easy acting, which is very convincing.
Verdict
Bollywood churns out ample films but this one is worth a watch. Keeping aside how it will fare at the Box-Office, Pad Man has definitely gets us thinking about the plight of women who cannot afford sanitary napkins. In villages, thousands of women contact deadly diseases during menstruation but are unable to afford and unaware of the benefits of using pads. This film must be appreciated. Therefore you all go and watch it.
