Actor Suriya assures surefire box-office openers and Mass, his newest film, is billed to be no exception. The film, now playing at theatres in the UAE, has a wide opening across India and several overseas markets and advance bookings are at an all-time high.
With the stupendous success of Anegan behind him, naturally expectations of Mass are high, more so because the film is directed by Venkat Prabhu, an acclaimed director who is ready to push the envelope and break stereotypes.
Prabhu admits that the biggest challenge with Mass was that he was making the film with Suriya who has an incredible fan following and fans have certain set expectations. Adding that the challenges were worth it, Prabhu says the film’s totality owes a lot to Suriya, who was willing to push boundaries to achieve excellence.
Also starring Nayanthara, Parthiban, Samuthirakani and Premgi Amaren, Mass is not a typical Suriya movie. For one, it is a horror-comedy, yes, the very genre that is now the rage in Tamil Nadu. Venkat Prabhu has also whipped up the curiosity factor with a promo cut of Suriya appearing in fangs. But the makers are not willing to reveal if it is just a publicity stunt or along the lines of Shankar’s I, one of those ‘dream sequence’ songs that has no relevance to the main story line.
Prabhu says that he was not following the trend of making horror-comedies, adding when he commenced writing Mass, there were hardly any such movies in that genre out there.
Featuring some stylish visual effects, Mass has all the ingredients for a surefire hit. The only question is whether it will beat the existing box office record of Suriya.
