All Emirates flights to and from Munich have been cancelled for Tuesday, December 5. This comes as the city grapples with one of the snowiest December on record.
Emirates posted on their website about how four flights between Munich and Dubai had been cancelled. “Customers with onward connections to Munich on Emirates flights will not be accepted for travel at their point of origin on December 5 and December 6,” it wrote in an update on their website. “We are monitoring the situation closely and aim to give customers as much notice as possible if there are any further changes to our operations.”
Affected customers were advised to contact their travel agents or local Emirates office for rebooking options.
This is the fourth consecutive day that operations at Munich airport have come to a grinding halt. On Saturday air traffic was halted after a winter storm dumped snow across southern Germany and parts of Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic, affecting travel across the region.
For Dubai resident K.M.- who cannot be identified due to company protocol- a quick 4-day trip to Munich has turned into a never-ending ordeal. He had embarked on a work-related trip to Munich and was due to return on Saturday when his flight was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.
“I was not able to extend my hotel booking,” he said, speaking to Khaleej Times. “So I had to go hunting for hotel rooms around the area. I was supposed to fly out yesterday and that also got cancelled. I have hotel booking only until today and I am not sure if I can extend. So now I am just in a limbo.”
K.M. said that he had explored other options to get back. “The entire public transport system has been snowed in so I don’t have the option of taking a train elsewhere to catch a flight,” he said. He shared some photos of his surroundings in Munich.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Etihad Airways has confirmed that the airline’s flights to Munich are operating on Tuesday, after being grounded on Monday. “We have our flights EY003 and EY004 are on schedule,” he said. “We are still monitoring the situation for our flights scheduled for early on Wednesday. However, we are not expecting any delays.”
