Deposed Chief Justice Promises
to Make Important Disclosures

ISLAMABAD - Making his first appearance in the Supreme Court premises since he was deposed by Gen. Musharraf last year, chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry has promised to make important disclosures on the first anniversary of the day he and sixty other judges were sacked by the military ruler on November 3

“I will expose many faces,” Iftikhar said adding that he would also divulge details of the offers and demands made to him by the then government when he addresses the Rawalpindi Bar Association on Jovember 3.

Justice Iftikhar this afternoon addressed the last meeting of the executive committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA)headed by Chuadhry Aitzaz Ahsan who makes wayto the new president be elected next week.

Iftikhar arrived in the Supreme Court on top of a high drama reminscent of the days when he and the lawyers faced barricades and excesses by security forces under orders of Gen. Musharraf to prevent them from entering the Supreme Court.

The outgoing SCBA had invited Iftikhar to have tea with its members in association’s office inside the Supreme Court building.

But police and para-military troops were deployed around the area where the court and other important government buildings are located and incoming traffic from adjacent roads leading to the Constitution Avenue was blocked.

The incumbent chief justice Hameed Dogar ordered that gates of the Supreme Court buildingbe sealed and called for security protection from the administration.

Lawyers led by Aitzaz and other office bearers of the SCBA were refused entry into the court.

In the Judges’ Colony where Iftikhar continues to reside in the official residence, was also surrounded by the police which erected barricades to prevent any movement. However, after several hours, the administration allowed the deposed chief justice to come out of his residence and travel in a motorcade of lawyers to the court.

In his brief address Iftikhar paid tributes to the lawyers for continuing their movement for restoration of independent judiciary. “This is a noble cause that is bound to achieve success”, he said.

Iftikhar said the November 3 actions of Gen. Musharraf were unconstitutional and could not be validate except by two-third majority of the Parliament. Since this has not been done, these actions remain illegal.
