Dubai's fascination for superlatives knows no bounds. The latest additions to the list include the world's tallest residential tower, world's tallest observation deck, the world's longest indoor ski slope and the largest dancing fountain in the world.
All these unique features are part of Meydan One, a new project announced by the Meydan Group, developer of Dubai's racecourse, in Dubai on Monday. The first phase of Meydan One is scheduled for completion before 2020.
His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, officially approved the development.
Located between Meydan and Al Khail Road, Meydan One incorporates residential, leisure and hospitality components.
Dubai One, at a proposed height of 711 metres, is expected to surpass the World One towers in India as the tallest residential skyscraper. The tower will be mixed-use, with 885 apartments, a 5-star hotel with 350 keys, a conference centre, an observation deck at 655m, a sky restaurant at 675m and a yacht club. The project also includes a 100-berth marina and a four-kilometre canal.
"In a city which never stops innovating, today's announcement is significant for the future of Dubai and the UAE. We have committed to developing a multi-use destination which will cater to every kind of person living and working here, as well as those who travel from around the world to visit," Saeed Humaid Al Tayer, chairman of Meydan, said.
Meydan One Mall
Similar to the proposed Mall of the World project, the Meydan One Mall will feature a retractable roof which can be opened in winter months. With a gross floor area of five million square metres, the mall will host more than 300 restaurants, cafes and kiosks.
The Meydan One Mall will also feature the world's longest indoor ski slope at 1.2km, a 25,000sqm indoor multi-purpose sports facility, bicycle and jogging trails, a 9km boardwalk, the largest dancing fountain in the world reaching over 420m, a 300m-long beach, a civic plaza that can host up to 60,000 people and a heritage village.
Meydan Arena will be located at the base of the ski slope. With a seating capacity of 8,000, it will host sporting events, concerts and theatre shows. The civic plaza will be home to a floating stage, fountains and a waterfall.
The beach in Meydan One will be situated adjacent to the crystal lagoons in District One of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum City.
In a tie-up with Indian developer Sobha Group, Meydan had launched District One, a collection of premium villas, as phase one of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum City. The ambitious master project, spread across 47 million square feet, includes the world's largest mall, 100 hotels and a public park three times bigger than London's Hyde Park.
