Four watchmen hurt in fire

AJMAN — Four watchmen suffered minor burns when a fire broke out in a warehouse containing smuggled gas cylinders in Masfoot district of Ajman on Sunday.

Minor damage to properties were also reported, according to sources from Ajman Civil Defence.

Colonel Salih Saeed Al Matroushi, Director General of Ajman Civil Defence, said that the warehouse contained a large number of gas cylinders of different sizes, which were smuggled from a neighbouring country. "These gas cylinder were found inconsistent to distribution as per the requirements of the Emirate Gas Company and Adnoc."

He explained that the owners of these cylinders are practicing illegal activities by bringing them to the emirate without licence and permission and storing them in Masfoot and Muzairi to sell them for cheap prices to consumers.

Colonel Al Matroushi stressed that this kind of business is illegal and the concerned authorities like the municipality and the police should play a great role in combating such activities in the country. These cylinders, which were found non-compliant to safety specifications and could be dangerous to the buyers. He pointed out that the Civil Defence Department will coordinate with Ajman Municipality and police to conduct inspection campaign particularly in rural areas.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Saif Salim Al Shamsi, Deputy Director of Ajman Municipality, said that the municipality will coordinate with the police to organise inspection campaign targeting companies that import gas cylinders and store them illegally in warehouses. The municipality will make every effort to protect consumers and combat the commercial malpractices and cheating in the emirate.
