When Sony debuted the historic Walkman in 1979, it came with an equally-iconic part that, at the time, had already been in existence for over a decade: the 3.5mm audio jack, which until today is the most-used audio connector for pretty much all of us.
That may change pretty soon.
Rumours are that Apple is to ditch the 3.5mm jack in the next iteration of the iPhone this year - and that is likely to spark a rapid shift away from the familiar connector, given the influence the company has over the industry.
That would also mean better sound quality.
"The quality of music reproduction from portable music players has improved exponentially in that time, but the headphone jack will never let us experience that change fully," axiom telecom managing director Faisal Al Bannai, said.
He added that the two most popular operating systems, Apple's iOS and Google's Android, have better alternatives by offering audio output via their data connections: Apple's eight-pin Lightning connector, the micro-USB used by Android devices, and wirelessly via Bluetooth.
This is a shift worth seeing - and hearing.
