Microsoft has announced the worldwide release of Office 2016 for Windows. Microsoft also announced new and enhanced services within Office 365 and the availability of Office 2016 for Mac.
The latest version of Office has been redesigned for Windows 10 optimisation, improved collaboration and tighter security. All apps within the Office suite have been updated, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access, Project and Visio.
The new Office 2016 apps are available in 40 languages across the world and require Windows 7 or later. Office 365 subscribers can choose to download the new Office 2016 apps as part of their subscription," Ihsan Anabtawi, regional manager, Applications and Services Microsoft Gulf, said in a statement.
Anabtawi said automatic updates will begin rolling out to consumers and small business subscribers next month, and to commercial customers early next year. "Office 2016 is also available as a one-time purchase for both PCs and Macs."
"The way people work has changed dramatically, and that is why Microsoft is focused on reinventing productivity and business processes for the mobile-first, cloud-first world," said Satya Nadella, chief executive officer of Microsoft. "These latest innovations take another big step forward in transforming Office from familiar set of individual productivity apps to a connected set of apps and service designed for modern working, collaboration and teamwork."
Office 2016 delivers new versions of the Office desktop apps for Windows, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, Project, Visio and Access. By subscribing to Office 365, customers can get always-up-to-date, fully installed apps for use across their devices, combined with a continually evolving set of consumer and commercial services, such as OneDrive online storage, Skype for Business, Delve, Yammer and enterprise-grade security features.
The Office 2016 apps simplify collaboration and remove barriers to team success. Co-authoring is now provided in Word, PowerPoint and OneNote desktop software, including real-time typing.
Outlook 2016 provides the smartest inbox yet, with lightning fast search, and automatic removal of low priority mail. Excel 2016 now includes integrated publishing to Power BI and new modern chart types to help you make the most of your data.
Office 2007 was the last major change to the look and feel of Office thanks to the Ribbon UI, and Microsoft hasn't made any drastic changes in Office 2010. If you're used to working in Office, then the 2016 version won't break your workflow.
Microsoft has made Word a little more intelligent this time around, with some new features that are helpful. But the biggest addition in Word is real-time co-authoring. For the first time in a desktop version of Word, the user can now see what others are typing in real time when multiple people are editing a document stored on one of Microsoft's cloud services. This has been previously reserved only for Web versions of Office, and used widely on Google Docs.
Business customers benefit from additional security features for Office apps. Built-in Data Loss Prevention cuts the risk of leaking sensitive data and multifactor authentication helps ensure secure access outside the corporate network. Microsoft promises later this year it will enable Enterprise Data Protection, which will allow sharing of secure corporate content across apps and cloud locations.
