The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), in a statement, said PCCW - Awaser Oman Consortium achieved “the highest marks in the technical and commercial evaluation as well as the financial bid.”

It added its endorsement would be forwarded to the Minister of Transport and Communications after all the necessary requirements are met by the winning bidder.

TRA said the winner would be given 15 working days to honour its obligation “in accordance with the Information Memorandum.”

“This is regarded as a milestone in the Sultanate’s liberalisation policy of the telecommunications sector,” the statement said, adding that TRA was committed to the “principles of transparency, clarity and equality throughout the entire stages of bidding process.”

Currently, majority state-owned Omantel is the sole fixed line service provider in Oman, although there are mobile companies – Oman Mobile and Nawras.
