Qatar to build new LLDPE plant

DOHA — The foundation stone for a new LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene) plant is to be laid in Qatar’s southern industrial city of Mesaieed today. The $3.2 billion Qatofin plant is a joint venture between Qatar Petrochemicals Company (QAPCO), 63 per cent; Total Petrochemicals (36 per cent) and QP (1 per cent) and is due to start production in the last quarter of 2008.

The plant, which will take its feedstock from an ethylene cracker in Ras Laffan Industrial City, will process 422,000 tonnes per year of ethylene and 38,000 tonnes of Butene-1 to produce 450,000 tpy of LLDPE, which will be marketed in Asia (especially the Chinese market) and Europe. Qatofin will use the Unipole Polyethylene gas-phase process from Univation Technologies. Snamprogetti of Italy have been awarded the Engineering, Procurement and construction (EPC) contract, and civil and industrial works contractor, Archirodon of Greece, have the contract for the marine works.

Last week, Qatar’s Heir Apparent, Shaikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, laid the foundation stone for the new $800 million ethylene cracker in Ras Laffan Industrial City.
