Sony Europe’s vice president Serge Foucher added in the joint news conference that the plant would eventually employ 3,000 people. Half of workforce would come from an existing factory owned by the company at nearby Trnava.
Production at the new plant should be launched in September 2007 with annual production eventually rising to 3.0 million units during 2008, Foucher added.
The Japanese giant received incentives from the Slovak state to site the factory in the Central European country but Fico has declined to give details of how much.
In Tokyo, Sony Corp. said that production from the factory would meet growing demand in Europe.
Sony currently operates European LCD TV plants in Barcelona, Spain, and in Trnava, Slovakia. The Trnava plant would remain in service but cease producing LCD TVs once the new plant starts operating, the Tokyo statement said.
“With 10 years of TV manufacturing experience in Trnava, we are pleased to announce the establishment of our new plant in Nitra, which will enable us to boost Sonys LCD TV business in Europe,” Sony corporate executive officer Katsumi Ihara said.
After the establishment of the new plant, the Barcelona site would continue to manufacture LCD TVs and also serve as the main technology center for the Sony products in Europe, the statement said.
LCD makers have been increasing capacity to meet booming demand for flat-screen televisions and computer monitors.
