The Socialist minister said in an interview with SonntagsZeitung that he wanted to open up the the Swiss railway company CFF to private investors on the stock market.

But the government would retain the control of the company, he added.

Leuenberger said there was not enough money in the public coffers to fund the network's future needs. ‘For additional investment, we need new sources of revenue,’ he added.

He said he had been inspired by the experience of Germany's rail company Deutsche Bahn, which sold 25 percent of its capital to raise the money it needed.
