GIVING BACK

Enter the new year by doing good. The Dhaka Project Calendar is aiming to raise funds for the children of the slums of Dhaka by breaking the cycle of poverty and giving them a foundation, a base from which to build a better life. This calendar was put together in the summer of 2010 where children from Dhaka were asked what they aspire to be in their futures; their ambitions ranged from teachers and doctors to architects and army officers. The Calendar will be available at Virgin stores for Dhs75 till the end of January 2011. All the proceeds from the calendars will go directly to the Dhaka Project helping to facilitate the education for these ambitious children.

The Dhaka Project is a deeply passionate labour of kindness and hope started by Emirates Airline flight attendant Maria Conceicao in 2005. The children’s education is a key focus but the charity also focuses on mens and womens skills development through the Catalyst arm of the project. While The Dhaka Project focuses on children, Catalyst addresses the needs of the parents.

Some of the amazing accomplishments already achieved include a school that’s been setup with 600 children as well as the Catalista school utilised for adults to teach basic reading and writing English courses.

HAVE YOU CHECKED in to the Belgian Beer Café lately? Think you’re a regular? But are you the ‘mayor’?

If you already use Foursquare on your smart phone you’ll already be familiar with the set-up. For those yet to get in to the application, foursquare is a new form of social media that uses the GPS navigation in smart phones to tell users what venues are nearby, and lets them ‘check in’ to venues to alert their friends, leave tips, and even earn points. The person who checks in to a place the most is known as the mayor, but this title can change hands very quickly depending on who checks in, when, and how many times.

The Belgian Beer Café at Crowne Plaza Dubai Festival City has started a ‘race for mayorship’ this New Year’s Eve. Whoever is listed as the mayor of the Belgian Beer Café at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve on Foursquare will win a brunch for four on New Year’s Day.

Who will be the first mayor of the Belgian Beer Café for 2011? Ladies and gentlemen, the mayoral race is on. The New Year’s Day brunch is priced at Dhs295, including beverages and live entertainment. For more information call 04
