The man responsible for putting India's number one music company T-Series on the world map was in Dubai to attend the shooting schedule of his upcoming film, Street Dancer  3 D starring Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor.
The Chairman and Managing Director of T-Series Bhushan Kumar sounded excited for the slate of movies that his company is presenting this year - Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer Bharat, Street Dancer 3 D, Ajay Devgn, and Tabu starrer De De Pyaar De and Shahid Kapoor starrer Kabir Singh.
"It is a big year for us and this year, we have taken a big leap by telling different stories like Bharat, De De Pyaar De and Street Dancer. Bharat is a human story, and it will connect with people universally. It is not a Dabangg kind of action-packed film. This film will touch your heart. It is an emotional film yet commercial with lots of entertainment and humor. Bharat will be a big treat for audiences, whereas Street Dancer is a big dance franchise that we have started. We are shooting for some dance and scenes here (in Dubai). We are shooting three songs in this schedule, and this is a significant schedule for us," said Bhushan whose company T-Series is known as the topmost music label in the country which is also a formidable film studio, producing as many as 18 films this year.
He added that he gives complete freedom to his writers, joint producers, and directors, "but we get into the creative aspects of the script. Once we are comfortable with that, then we keep our distance and give complete freedom to the team. But, yes, we are involved in the music making to make sure that it is commercially a hit."
He is also thrilled that his company has become the no. 1 YouTube Channel in the world. While talking about being the most subscribed as well the most viewed YouTube Channel, Bhushan said that it is all about presenting the right content. "That journey is related to the content that we make. Sometimes people say that the data in India is cheap and that is the reason for our channel to become the most subscribed and viewed channel in the world. But that does not mean that people will come to only my channel. There are thousands of channels that they can subscribe to. But if they have made my channel the most successful and viewed channel of the world, it is because of the quality of my channel. They are enjoying consuming our content."
Bhushan believes that he inherited this sensibility of music from his late father Gulshan Kumar who was known for his sense of melody. "I can't hire a person who can judge music for me," argued Bhushan. Such was his father's understanding and love for music, that he created the songs of classic music album Aashiqui even before the movie was planned.

Discovering new talents
In recent times, his company has given a big break to singers like Yo Yo Honey Singh, Himesh Reshammiya, Neha Kakkar, Armaan Malik, etc. "Guru Randhawa was initially working in my Delhi office focussing on Punjabi music. When we chose his song Suit Suit Karda for Hindi Medium, there was no looking back for him. Recently, we took a big leap by collaborating with Pitbull with him.
"We are promoting many other talented new singers like Milind Gaba, Dhvani Bhanushali, and more. My sister Tulsi Kumar is a singer too, and now she is coming out with many singles. During my father's time, he gave a break to great singers like Sonu Nigam, Kumar Sanu, Anuradha Paudwal, etc."
His motive is to bring the golden era of 90s pop music back by doing 50 non-film singles this year as believes that there are restrictions when songs are made for movies. Hence, the non-film market is the right opportunity for him to make songs that people want and also merge it into a video.
Surprisingly Bhushan does not enjoy listening to music because music is work for him. "I devote most of my time not building my taste for music, but I keep on developing songs as per people's taste. I don't have a personal taste in music as I fear I might lose touch with the demands of the audiences."
Why recreate songs when you can make new?
We asked Bhushan why there is still a trend of remixing old songs in spite of having access to new lyricists, music composers, and singers. Bhushan argued that people love listening to old songs with new tunes, and as a businessman, he wants to supply to their demand. "We recreate songs. Remixes would happen in early 2000 where the entire songs were remixed with the great beats. Now we are changing the melody, and we are just keeping the hook of the old songs. We are changing the singers and the visualization fo the songs. These are not remixes. When we recreated Dilbar and Aankh Maare, many of the youths were not aware of the songs. It is a challenging job. It takes around one month to recreate songs. Remixes can be created in two hours. Recreation takes more time than creating new songs. The maximum number of views on YouTube and streaming side is for recreated songs because people want to listen to songs with old essence attached with new tunes. And I am just working for the maximum number of people who listen to our content."
