Bollywood singer Sunidhi Chauhan to rock Indian Independence Day concert in Abu Dhabi

The hitmaker is part of a three day celebration that features versatile singer Hariharan and stand ups Biswa and Amit Tandon

A host of events, featuring a mix of comedy and Bollywood music, has been planned this weekend to celebrate India's Independence Day in Abu Dhabi. Hosted by the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi, the three-day Jai Ho series will take place at the National Theatre from August 22 to 24. 
The celebration will kick off with two of India's popular stand-ups Amit Tandon and Biswa Kalyan Rath. The duo are known for their hilarious takes on day-to-day life and observational comedy. Expect to laugh out loud to a mix of Hindi and English gags. Then on Day 2, one of Bollywood's most sought-after singers, Sunidhi Chauhan, will set the stage afire with her vast repertoire of hit songs. The final day has versatile playback singer Hariharan who will present an evening of classical and soulful songs. 
Ahead of the event, City Times had a chat with Sunidhi Chauhan about her plans for the show, motherhood and music in general.  
You've been performing in the UAE for nearly two decades, what can fans expect at your show this time?
UAE is like a second home for me. Each time I perform here, it's the energy of the fabulous audience that brings out the best in me. This time too, music lovers can expect only the best from me!
Since it's an Independence Day concert, will you be doing any patriotic tunes?
I would love to sing the beautiful Ae Watan song from the film Raazi on this special occasion. But it all depends on the energy of the audience. I prefer to keep things fluid. 
Over time, your item numbers in Hindi movies have become major hits. Which genre do you prefer?
For me, It is all about the song, the music, lyrics, and the vibe. There is no particular genre that I prefer over the other. 
What's your take on the changing trend in Bollywood music?
I believe in the saying 'change is the only constant'. So let there be newer trends! The more, the better!
You took to singing at a very early age. Is there anything you regret missing from your childhood?
I have known no other way of life but of one full of music. Thankfully, I have lived my dream and I am living it every day. Hence, there is no room for regrets.
How did you prepare for the Hindi version of Beyonce's Can You Feel The Love Tonight from the Hindi remake of The Lion King. Any reference points that you used for the track?
I am so glad you asked me about this particular song. The track has lived with all of us who've loved (the song) and cried while watching the song in the original animated movie. The memory of the song itself was enough of a reference point for me. I am happy to have shared my interpretation with you all and I hope you've all liked it as well. 
You sang for Vikram Phadnis' upcoming Marathi film, Smile Please. How comfortable are you singing in a different language?
Vikram is a dear friend and I couldn't have been happier being a part of his new journey. I have sung many songs in Marathi before, so there wasn't any discomfort for me. 
Did you enjoy teaming up with Sonu Nigam again - for the Punjabi song Chori Chori. We heard the song is doing very well.
Sonu and I have sung so many songs in the past. It was great to team up with him once again for this wonderful melody. 
Are you peeved when your songs are remixed?
No. In fact I feel it is a compliment. Knowing that the songs I've sung so many years ago are still relevant and people have the thirst to redesign and present them again makes me feel nostalgic! 
Now that you have a baby to keep you busy at home, how do you manage your time?
This is the best time for me. The need to see my little boy grow every day has made me merge family and work seamlessly. Thankfully, I have my support system in place and I can only wish and pray that every working mother gets the same and more. 
Who else is performing?
It's going to be a laugh-a-thon when leading comedians Amit Tandon and Biswa Kalyan Rath go on stage together on the first day of the event. Amit's humour is universal and connects with all segments of the crowd. Biswa's style of comedy can best be described as angry rants bordering on what's socially acceptable. On the last day of Jai Ho, paying tribute to the diversity of India and presenting classical soulful music is playback singer and Padma Shri Award winner Hariharan. He is bringing his vast repertoire of songs from movies and albums to the show. An established ghazal singer and one of the pioneers in Indian fusion music, Hariharan has a song bank in various languages.
