CATALOGUE TO 'KICKSTART' ART

Dubai's cultural and art landscape is presently witnessing a huge makeover, with hundreds of eager artists constantly on the look out for space to show off their work. At the same time, a bountiful offering almost always succeeds in creating confusion in the minds of art lovers...

Thanks to a unique initiative carried out by the Art Space Gallery's everything related to art is just about to get even more clear. Cindy Kuan, marketing manager of the Art Space Gallery, explains, "This is our first catalogue and we are very excited about it. It is a catalogue that will feature some 100 artists, those who have already exhibited and those who will be exhibiting their work here during the course of the year. Apart from a picture of the artists, the catalogue will contain a brief profile of the artists and a few images of the work done by them so that people visiting exhibitions can familiarise themselves with the work of the different artists showing their work in Dubai."

The idea for the catalogue, Kuan says, emerged from the ASG's visitors' demands for more. "We always encounter enquiries like, 'What else do you have?' and that's when we thought we needed a systematic catalogue. We wanted to offer our guests a wider choice and variety that would suit their tastes. I believe this is the first art catalogue of its kind in the UAE. It will serve as a good handbook for people who love art, and those interested in purchasing art. We will be printing a catalogue every six months, to keep things fresh and highlight the various trends across the world.

Kuan mentioned that the catalogue, which is yet to be named, will feature a large number of overseas artists and will help people to know more about the trends navigating the world. All this, excluding the large space that has already been reserved for Arabic artists and Arabian art. "This catalogue will have an international feel and people who go through it will be able to even check out the art scene globally. You can expect a lot of overseas artists to be featured in it and we will be incorporating a lot of interviews and articles relating to art. It's heading towards being very informative."

The catalogue will be divided into four categories, depending on the prices of the works included in it. "It will provide a simple reference for business and domestic buyers to choose works according to their budgets." The four sections will further be subdivided to help potential buyers to head straight to sections containing information about their favourite artists. Apart from highlighting the artists, Kuan said that the catalogue will also serve as a guide from where paintings could be ordered. "Through the catalogue, we will help guests to commission the artist to paint according to specs provided by the buyers."

Paintings that are made to order? Yes, finally, they've arrived too.
