in Dubai, but it was for the first time that such an incident happened to me," he said.

It was a normal shopping outing and the bread is a regular item on the family’s shopping list. "On reaching home, my wife was serving the sliced bread to my children, when suddenly she found something white lodged in the piece of bread," Ali alleged.

"We first thought it was a balloon but on examining it closely, we discovered that it was a piece of latex rubber gloves that workers wear while performing duties related to food items," he said, adding : "I have nothing against Carrefour, and it is only in public interest that I brought this matter to the attention of the media. I just request hypermarkets to be extra careful when handling food products."

Clarifying on the issue, and apologising for the incident, Nabil Fayad, HR and Administration Manager, Carrefour Hypermarket at Century Mall, said : "It is a mistake for which we apologise and we assure that such a mistake was not meant to happen. At our hypermarket and at the bakery and butchery section especially, we take utmost care of hygiene."

Fayad, promising to investigate the matter thoroughly, said that after 12 midnight, all goods in this section which remain unsold are trashed. "We do not even prefer to give them to charity to avoid issues coming up later," he said.

He said that in case such problems arise with suppliers, the chain stops dealing with them. "In one such case, we took a sample to the municipality ourselves," he said.

Fayad said that every week, an inspection team from Dubai Municipality visits the hypermarket and checks everything including production and expiry dates, temperatures of chillers as well as the standards of hygiene.
