To fast safely and avoid slipping into a coma, diabetic patients should adjust their medication and dosage system, advised a medical expert. "Diabetic patients need to change the timings and dosages of their medication.

If patients take medicines at the wrong time, they run the risk of a hypo or hyper attack", warns Professor Richard Nabhan, Senior Consultant Physician, Cardiologist and Diabetologist at Al Noor Hospital Diabetic Centre.

Speaking to City Times yesterday, Dr Nabhan cautioned overeating at dusk, when the daily fast is over, is another common practice, which is dangerous for fasting diabetic patients. "There is a tendency for people to overeat when they break their fast. They traditionally start with dates and then have a big meal and lots of sweets."

"People with diabetes should try to eat the same size portions as they would normally eat when not fasting, and not to eat too many sweets and dates", advised the medical expert.
