Dubai is spoiling you this weekend. British drum and bass DJ duo Sigma are here and will be performing tonight at Zero Gravity. They have sold over 3 million singles and have played every festival main stage across the world. Their hit tracks include the UK number 1, Nobody to Love, Changing featuring Paloma Faith and Glitterball. City Times had a quick chat with them about Dubai, music and what it takes to be a successful DJ.
What are your thoughts on Dubai?
Dubai is like nowhere else on the planet! We love it. It's always interesting playing in a new place for the first time, as you never know what to expect from the crowd and the venues. Saying that we have had nothing but great experiences in Dubai and we are very excited to headline Ritual at Zero Gravity today.
What are the benefits of working as a DJ duo as opposed to being solo artists?
It's always good to have someone else to vibe off. As with most industries you have your ups and downs. It's nice to be able to talk through these times with a partner or mate. Joe and I are best mates so that always helps.
You've worked with a lot of amazing artists and musicians throughout your career. What do you think really makes an artist stand out from the rest?
You can tell a star instantly. There is a certain aura they have. We have worked with many people who have the full package. Obviously having a good voice and vision also helps!
What do you see coming up in the horizon in terms of new sounds or trends in music?
Everything goes in cycles. It would be nice to see bands getting attention again. There seems to be a bit of a lack of them getting the lime light at the min.
What percentage of being a successful DJ or artist goes beyond music and more into the marketing side of things?
It's important to have some business acumen. It's also very important to surround yourself with the right team and management. Everyone must pull in the right direction to make stuff happen. Writing music is obviously very important, but so is all the other stuff.
What advice do you have for young artists in this region trying to make it?
Keep pursuing your dream. It may take some time to get where you need to but if you love it enough you will make it. we did.
Do you have a ritual before you jump on stage and perform?
We usually have a few diet cokes and just get our sets in some sort of order! A nice meal always helps too but not too much red meat!
