Celebrity wardrobe favourite, designer Neeta Lulla turns up the colours and dials down the ‘bling’ for her latest collection

“Jewel Tones Are going to be big this season,” promises Bollywood designer Neeta Lulla when we catch up with her prior to her showcase at local fashion boutique Studio 8.

And, in view of her probably accurate prediction, Lulla’s latest collection features attractive feminine shades of orchid, rose pink, maroon, rust, emerald green and the festive season’s signature hue, dramatic red.

The designer notes that she has also tailor made her new set exclusively for her Dubai-based clientele. “I’m returning to the city after a very long time so it inspired me. My collection has elements of old world charm because during festivals people tend to bring out their traditional jewellery. But it definitely has a contemporary edge as well.”

For instance, some of Lulla’s striking confections – a mixed batch of kurtas, sarees and lehngas – are high on classic zardari work but elegant French lace makes frequent appearances.

“It’s contemporary in its fabrication but the overall look is very magnanimous. The set is a very colourful and sensuous one. Indian clothes have a way of reflecting our romantic heritage and cultural background.”

While most of the designer’s creative sentiments will resonate with local fashionistas, her take on the city’s perennial favourite – the ‘bling’ factor – has Lulla worried. Will people take to its limited use in her new line?

“If ‘bling’ is required, then I don’t shy away from using it. But I primarily prefer to stick to matte ‘bling’ because I like my clothes to have a dull finish. And that’s what you’ll get to see in this collection.”

Next in line for the designer is a very important showcase at the India Bridal Week at the end of the month, which will mark her completion of 25 years in the business.

Lulla remarks that creating larger-than-life bridal wear will definitely keep her well occupied for the next few days. “It’s challenging to design for such a big occasion but we can pull it off. Keep an eye out for that collection.”
