As the region’s first all-female comedy troupe, the Funny Girls recently tackled a rather unique audience when they performed at Rococo restaurant as part of Italian Week 2010.

New York native and Broadway veteran Mina Liccione hosted the show and offered the crowd her own take on mafioso culture and speaking Italian. In Liccione’s home, the word “mangi”, or “eat”, remains etched in her memory.

Angela Boshoff Hundal, a laidback South African whose routine focused mainly on her interracial marriage to a “very tall and equipped” Indian man, gave some insight on merging cultures and breaking stereotypes.

Her husband, she says, is 6’2’’ and never satisfied with her take on Indian cuisine.

LA-native Sophie Samuelian, originally from Armenia, pointed out the links between her country “which nobody could point out on a map” and the famous bravado Italians are known for. She managed to bring some raw California charm to the stage.

And then there was Lamya Tawfik, an Egyptian-born Muslim who performed the only routine completely in Italian. Tawfik spent three years taking evening classes to master her third language, bringing some Arab spice to the table.
